Violin Lessons:

Todd has a Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and recently finished his Master's degree in Film Composition from the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program. He has taught beginning and intermediate students to play the cello for 16 years. He has also conducted ensembles for most of that time. Todd makes his own arrangements of Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic pieces.

Todd also teaches theory classes for Hummie Mann, a two-time Emmy-winning film composer who established the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Association.

His first cello instructor was renowned Las Vegas show biz cellist Hyman Gold, from whom he began to take lessons in 1978. He continued his studies in Tacoma by taking lessons from Cathy Johnson and then with Coredlia Wikarski-Miedel, wife of Seattle Symphony conductor Rainer Miedel. His early musical education included playing for five years in the Tacoma Youth Symphony, and participating in a master class led by world-class cello player Janos Starker.

Todd attended the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory, where he majored in composition and studied with Richard Hoffmann, who was a student of  composer Arnold Schoenberg. Todd has taken a master's class with world-class cellist Janos Starker.

Cello Lessons:

Todd Kovell offers individual cello lessons Tuesday through Saturday at the Phinney Neighborhood Center in North Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood. His students have ranged in age from young children to adults.

Todd's teaching success includes preparing many young students to major in music at the college level. His students have attended the Interlochen and Marrowstone music camps, have played in the Seattle Youth Symphony, and have gone on to study with prestigious players such as Nathan Whittaker.
